Gerald “Jerry” Sheindlin is a well-known American author, television personality, jurist, and attorney who has spent many years as a trial judge serving the New York Supreme Court. He had a bit of a television career in 1999 and became a television arbitrator when he replaced former New York City Mayor Ed Koch as the presiding judge on The People’s Court
Gerald “Jerry” Sheindlin previously served in the Army during the Korean War, he received a B.A. from Long Island University and an L.L.B. from Brooklyn Law School, in 1959.

Jonathan is a retinal surgeon, and Greg and Nicole are lawyers following in their father’s footsteps. Nicole is the co-creator (along with her stepmother) of the Her Honor Mentoring program.
Before Judge Judy met and married her current husband Jerry Sheindlin, she was previously married for 12 years to Ronald Levy, who later became a prosecutor in juvenile court.
They moved to New York and had two children, Jamie Hartwright and Adam Levy. Judy and Ronald divorced in 1976 after 12 years of marriage.
